29 Chimera Court, Friday Afternoon

Mitsutada was out in his little garden today, even with the heat. His tomatoes needed tending, darn it. Besides, it kept him busy and reminded him of the chores back at the Citadel, which he absolutely missed on days like this where he was mostly alone and had to keep himself occupied.

It was starting to get to him, being away from all his fellow Danshi.

After having chastised Kanan for some time, Kaidan continued his run. It took him past Chimera Court. Spotting Mitsutada, he slowed to a stop. "Hey," he called in greeting, "How's it going?"

Mitsutada plucked one of the ripe tomatoes off the vine and held it up.

"My little crop is turning out quite nice," he said. "Now I just have to hope the daikon I grows well, too."

He gave Kaidan a smile. "And how are you?"

"Hey, looks great," Kaidan encouraged, "Are they sauce tomatoes or steak tomatoes?" That.. pretty much exhausted all he knew about tomatoes. Some were sauced. Some were sliced.

"Doing well, heat index considered," he added, "Thinking about maybe hitting the beach around sunset to cool off. I can only imagine the weather on the mainland, especially further in than the coast."

"Yes, this is a little extra hot for my liking," Mitsutada said. "The beach sounds like a good way to cool off, if you hit the water."

Though Mitsutada was the type of person who still wore his gloves even while at the beach in swim trunks. For... reasons.

"But I had to take care and water the plants today, at least. I'll retreat back into the house soon enough before I'm in danger of melting."

"That would be the plan," Kaidan affirmed, "Water'll be cool, and the air coming over it should be at least a little less hot." If not any less humid.

Look, someone being sensible about the heat, Kanan, take lessons.

"I imagine in this heat they probably need a lot of water," he guessed, knowing not much about tending a garden, "They probably also appreciate the company."

"Organic vegetables are the best," Mitsutada said. "They require a little extra attention but the end result is worth it. I'm used to doing fieldwork with a partner, of course, but here I have learned to make do with just myself."

"You're welcome to join me at the beach, if you'd like," Kaidan offered as though that weren't the most awkward thing in the world to say.

Listening to Mitsutada, he asked curiously, "Your roommates don't help out?"

"Sometimes," Mitsutada said. "But they are all living their own lives as well. It's a little different than when I am surrounded by my fellow Touken Danshi back at the Citadel."

"Touken Danshi?" Kaidan asked, tilting his head a little. He recognized the word for 'men', but the other word wasn't something he'd ever heard before. "Do you go back to your Citadel often?"

"It's what we're called, all of swords and spears and naginata given bodies to fight in the war," Mitsutada said.

"Wait, had I not told you that yet?"

He'd get to the Citadel part in a bit.

Kaidan shook his head, "No, and I didn't really understand what you just said now. Other than you're a fighter type, which I kind of guessed."

"You said you had some familiarity with Japan," Mitsutada said, trying to figure out how to better explain. "Are you familiar with Lord Date Masamune?"

He was going to try the historical angle, first.

How to say this in a way that wouldn't offend Mitsutada. "Um. Sort of? That was a character in a movie my mum used to watch."

"Well he was a real person," Mitsutada said, just rolling with it. "A daimyo in the Sengoku era. And he had a sword that was named after the time it cut clean through a candlestick... Shokudaikiri. Forged by the great smith Mitsutada Osafune."

He gave a hopefully reassuring smile. "I am that sword."

"That makes sense, it was a historical drama," Kaidan agreed, riiiiight up until the 'I am that sword' part, which made zero sense, because the sentient being in front of him was a bipedal humanoid, not a chunk of metal with sharp edges on.

"You might have to walk me through how a sword from a time that's almost myth became the guy holding the tomatoes in front of me," Kaidan apologized.

"A sage summoned my soul from the blade which created this body," Mitsutada said. "And I'm hardly myth. I'm pretty sure my blade is on display in a Japanese museum right now."

"I wasn't implying you were a myth," Kaidan apologized, "Where I'm from is further in time from here, the Edo era was, um, a really long time ago." Well, yeah, Kaidan, even on this earth it was. The sword could be in a museum in his Japan, but he wouldn't know.

"Well I'm from the future as well," Mitsutada explained. "2206 to be exact. So it's been some time since the Edo period for me as well."

"2186," Kaidan told him, "Though I doubt it's the same as your timeline. Though your mention of a Citadel made me wonder at first. That's what we call the center of galactic government, where I'm from."

[battlewithstyle]

"We don't travel in space," Mitsutada said. "Though we do travel in time. Our Citadel is just where all of us who have been summoned from weapons live so that we can go on missions to protect history."

"Are there people who want to change history?" Kaidan asked, a little confused.

Also, a little curious. He'd had no few thoughts in that direction himself, upon finding the timeline was this far back.

"An entire army of demons," Mitsutada said with a casual shrug. "Their goal is to change history, for whatever reasons they have. We, the Touken Danshi, go back to stop them wherever and whenever they try."

"Worthy goal," Kaidan noted, then mused, "I wonder if your demon army is related to Peter's demon army and honestly, who keeps demons as infantry?"
